Japan’s two major airport authorities have warned travelers that such motorized suitcases will not be allowed inside their airports. The Japanese news agency Kyodo gave this information. Japanese police authorities have ordered local suitcase sellers to warn buyers of Japan’s strict laws before selling such suitcases.

These motorized electric suitcases are much like children’s scooters. They run on lithium ion batteries. Apart from ordinary travelers, stars like Paris Hilton and Shilpa Shetty are also seen using such suitcases.

Last June, a 30-year-old Chinese woman was sentenced for carrying such a suitcase on the streets of Osaka. According to Japan’s traffic laws, the suitcase the woman was riding can travel up to 13 kilometers per hour and is classified as a motorized bicycle. A driving license is required to operate such portable luggage.

Takeru Shibayama, a senior scientist at the Institute of Transportation at the Vienna University of Technology, said Japan’s various types of vehicles, which fall under motorized bicycles, will now force a discussion on whether electric suitcases can be relegated to a new category.

According to Kyodo, Japan recently classified this electric suitcase as a motorized vehicle. Therefore, if you want to drive on the roads there, you must carry the necessary safety equipment along with the driving license.
